Entrepreneurs entering the frozen fish market first must choose the type of fish they wish to sell and understand various regulations that may be established in their area. By understanding all that’s required of them, new or experienced business owners can move forward in their goal of selling frozen fish.

Locate a distributor for the types of fish you wish to carry. Frozen fish distributors typically handle the packaging and shipping of their product directly to the store, keeping the fish at sub-zero temperatures throughout its journey.

Determine contract length and shipping costs, as well as pricing for deliveries from the distributor. Fish typically doesn’t have a suggested retail price. Market price drives the cost of fish, so these contracts regularly rely on being a certain percentage under market price to allow profit for both the distributor and retailer.

Purchase freezers to hold the inventory. The quality of frozen fish can deteriorate if the fish freezes again after thawing.

A preferable retail location will be near a grocery outlet where there’s more likely to be higher foot traffic from customers shopping for food.
